Adventures in Vectorland

Vectors… outlines… contours… paths… Béziers… wiggle-thingies. Call them what you will, my friend, but know that drafting with them is a truly specialized skill. This hands-on session goes deep on the subject, starting with basic principles and moving up to advanced drafting techniques, ingenious hacks and more.

TOPICS  For Adventures in Vectorland, we’ll cover a range of items: prepping bitmap art for vector tracing; auto-tracing methods; strategies and approaches for vector-drafting your letterforms; advanced vector editing options; principles behind a strong letterform (logo / wordmark / icon); optical considerations; working with components; ingenious time-saving techniques; iterative proofing; and more.

SOFTWARE  We’ll demonstrate using FontLab Studio 5: the current industry standard for font development. Many of the same principles we cover do carry over to Illustrator and other vector drawing applications.

OPTIONAL Bring a Mac or Windows laptop, preinstalled with FontLab Studio 5 (demo or full version) if you’d like to follow along. :: If you have existing artwork you’d like to use for the workshop, you’re welcome to bring it in in scanned form.
