Yo, put away your broadnibs and put on a propellor beanie. It’s time to learn about OpenType Feature Coding. From simple glyph substitutions on up through complex glyph cycling — plus making sure your features work across all possible applications — this session will set you up nicely. [PS– You look good in a beanie.]
TOPICS We’ll start with basic concepts and syntax. We’ll range up from there to cover advanced Feature options, and the kind of behavior you can expect when using the fonts in different programs. SOFTWARE We’ll be using FontLab Studio 5: the current industry standard for font development. OPTIONAL Bring a Mac or Windows laptop, preinstalled with FontLab Studio 5 (demo or full version) if you’d like to follow along. We’ll provide a copy of the (PSY/OPS) font we’ll be be demo-ing with. • Wi-Fi and other amenities are also available on site. PREREQUISITES No prior experience with FontLab, type design or graphic design necessary — though it can’t hurt to have it. All skill levels welcome! DIFFICULTY LEVEL Intermediate to Advanced. APPROACH The workshop sessions consist of informational briefs, walkthroughs and hands-on exercises. This workshop packs in a lot of information, but it is conducted in an easygoing, conversational manner. Open Q&A is encouraged throughout. INSTRUCTOR Rod Cavazos is Principal Designer at PSY/OPS Type Foundry. He has designed typefaces for world class clients and brands for 20 years. He is an Adjunct Professor at California College of the Arts where he’s taught the popular Type Design Studio for 8 years. He is also Chief Creative at Glyfyx Inc, a startup dedicated to the development of letter-based toys, games and art objects. FORMAT Small group intensive. Two hours. SIZE Ten seats. The nearest is across the street on Mason, at Hotel Metropolis ($20 flat rate valet). Street parking is not available in this area. :: Bikes can be parked in the basement of our building. Bring a lock; and ask the lobby guard for access. :: Sign in at the lobby before going up to the fifth floor. Our studio is straight across from the elevator lobby.
